When You Need a Reach Truck

  • High-rack warehouses. Standard counterbalance forklifts top out at 15–20 feet. Reach trucks go to 40 feet. If your racking goes above 20 feet, you need a reach truck.
  • Narrow aisles. Standard forklifts need 12–13 foot aisles. Reach trucks operate in 8.5–10 foot aisles. That aisle width savings translates to 20–30% more storage capacity in the same warehouse footprint.
  • Cold storage. Houston's food distribution industry runs on cold storage warehouses. Reach trucks with cold-rated batteries and sealed electronics handle -20°F freezer environments.
  • Distribution centers. Houston's 250M+ sq ft of warehouse space includes major DCs for Amazon, Walmart, Home Depot and dozens of 3PLs. Reach trucks are the standard equipment for high-bay picking and putaway.

Battery and Charging

Reach trucks run on electric power — there's no propane option. A fully charged battery lasts 6-8 hours of continuous operation. Single-shift warehouses charge overnight and start fresh each morning. Multi-shift operations need either a battery swap station or opportunity charging during breaks.

Our rental reach trucks come with a built-in charger. Plug into a standard 480V industrial outlet overnight. If your facility doesn't have the right power, tell us — we can supply a portable charging station. For cold storage applications, the battery drains faster in freezer temperatures. Plan for 20-30% less runtime in -20°F environments.

Reach Truck vs. Order Picker

Both work in narrow aisles at height. The difference is what gets lifted. A reach truck lifts full pallets — the operator stays on the ground and the forks go up. An order picker lifts the operator — they ride up to the pick face and pull individual cases or items.

If you're doing full-pallet putaway and retrieval, you need a reach truck. If you're picking individual items from shelves (e-commerce fulfillment, parts distribution), an order picker is more efficient. Many high-volume warehouses use both — reach trucks for receiving and putaway, order pickers for individual order fulfillment.

Operator Training Requirements

Reach trucks require specific OSHA training beyond standard forklift certification. The stand-up operating position, rear-pivot steering and high-lift mast create different handling characteristics than a sit-down counterbalance lift. Operators need to understand load capacity at height — a reach truck rated at 3,500 lbs at ground level may only hold 2,500 lbs at 36 feet. Our training program covers reach truck certification in one day.

Cold Storage and Freezer Applications

Houston's food distribution industry runs on cold storage. Reach trucks are the primary equipment inside freezer warehouses — they handle the narrow aisles and high racking that cold storage requires. We stock reach trucks with cold-rated hydraulic fluid, heated operator compartments and condensation-resistant electronics specifically for sub-zero environments. Battery life drops 20-30% in freezer conditions below zero, so plan your daily charging schedule accordingly.

Houston Warehouse Districts

Most of our reach truck rentals go to warehouses in the I-10 East corridor (Channelview, Jacinto City), the Northwest industrial district (Beltway 8 and Highway 290) and the growing logistics hub near IAH airport. We deliver to all Houston-area warehouses and can have a reach truck on your floor within 24 hours for in-stock models. Same-day delivery is available inside Beltway 8 when you call before noon.
