When a Pallet Jack Is Enough
Not every job needs a full forklift. If you're moving pallets on flat ground — dock to rack, truck to staging area, backroom to sales floor — a pallet jack does the work at a third of the cost. No forklift certification required for manual jacks. Electric jacks do require training but it's a fraction of the full forklift certification process.
- → Loading dock operations. Unloading trailers and moving pallets to staging areas. Walk-behind jacks handle most standard pallet weights.
- → Retail and grocery. Backroom-to-floor restocking. Compact enough for store aisles. Low noise for customer-facing environments.
- → Event setup. NRG Center, George R. Brown Convention Center, Houston arena events. Moving pallets of equipment, supplies and staging materials across large flat floors.
- → Overflow and surge capacity. Your warehouse has forklifts but peak season needs more ground-level pallet movement capacity. Pallet jacks fill the gap without the cost of another forklift.
Walk-Behind vs. Ride-On
Walk-behind pallet jacks are smaller, lighter and cheaper. The operator walks behind the unit and steers with a handle. Best for short distances — dock to staging area, truck to first row of racking. If your typical move is under 100 feet, a walk-behind is fine.
Ride-on pallet jacks have a platform the operator stands on. Faster over longer distances. If you're moving pallets across a 50,000+ sq ft warehouse floor, the ride-on saves hours of walking per shift. They also handle heavier loads — up to 8,000 lbs on the heavy-duty models. The trade-off is a higher rental cost and slightly wider turning radius.
Battery and Maintenance
Electric pallet jacks run on 24V battery packs. A full charge lasts a full shift (6-8 hours) under normal warehouse use. Charge overnight with the included onboard charger. Heavy use — constant loading and unloading at a busy receiving dock — might drain the battery in 5-6 hours. If you need all-day coverage, let us know and we'll set up an opportunity charging schedule or supply a unit with a quick-swap battery.
Maintenance is included with every rental. If a wheel goes flat, the drive motor acts up or anything else breaks down, call us. We'll send a technician or swap the unit. Most pallet jack issues are minor — worn steer wheels, loose connectors, low hydraulic fluid. Our pre-delivery inspection catches these before the unit reaches your site.
Do You Need OSHA Certification?
Manual (hand) pallet jacks don't require OSHA certification. Electric pallet jacks — both walk-behind and ride-on — are classified as powered industrial trucks. OSHA requires operators to be trained and evaluated before use. The training covers steering, braking, load limits and pedestrian safety. It's simpler and faster than full forklift certification but it is required. We offer operator training that includes pallet jack certification.
Houston Dock and Warehouse Operations
Pallet jacks are the workhorses of Houston's freight docks and distribution centers. Cross-dock operations along I-10 and Highway 225 use them to transfer pallets between trailers without racking. Retail distribution centers use them to stage outbound shipments. Food distributors use stainless-steel models for cold storage environments where sanitation matters.
